Abstract:Suicide prevention and postvention strategies have become a critical priority in National Health Service (NHS) workplaces, particularly in light of elevated suicide rates among female nurses and doctors. When effectively implemented, postvention efforts are proactive, aiming to reduce future harm and support those affected by suicide. In response to the suspected suicides of 11 current and former employees between 2019 and 2021 at an NHS Trust in England, semi-structured interviews with 29 participants who had experienced the loss of a colleague were conducted. The findings revealed that the Trust lacked a clear postvention strategy for addressing staff suicides, which destabilised certain areas of the organisation. The impact of losing a colleague to suicide in maintaining a stable and functional workforce should not be underestimated.
